Keeping Our Church Running Smoothly

Pentecostalism in India traces its roots to the early 20th century when the charismatic Christian movement found its way to the southern region of Travancore, now part of the Indian state of Kerala. The Pentecostal movement in India was marked by a fervent spiritual experience, miraculous occurrences, and a deep commitment to spreading the Christian message. This chapter of Pentecostal history began with the arrival of Western missionaries who worked closely with national ministers to establish a vibrant Pentecostal presence in the region. The growth of Pentecostalism in India was characterized by the extraordinary impact of notable figures like K. E. Abraham, C. Manasseh, and A. C. Samuel, who played crucial roles in its development.

The partnership between Western missionaries and Indian nationals was instrumental, with the latter serving as translators, pastors, and evangelists. This collaboration was vital in establishing and growing Pentecostal churches throughout the region. The establishment of Bethel Bible School provided a platform for training ministers and propagating Pentecostal beliefs. In the early days, the movement’s impact was characterized by a profound emphasis on the miraculous, a priority placed on the Word of God, unity and solidarity among believers, a deep commitment to missions, a life of sacrifice, and a “faith mission” approach marked by unwavering trust in divine providence.
